Job Description

Idaho State University (ISU) is seeking an inspiring and dynamic leader to join our team as Vice President for University Advancement. Reporting directly to the President, this pivotal role involves advising and collaborating closely with university leadership to propel ISU forward. The Vice President for Advancement also serves as the Executive Vice President of the Idaho State University Foundation (ISUF), a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to inspiring robust funding, support and engagement from alumni, parents, friends, corporations, foundations and others for the benefit of ISU. As a key member of the President's Administrative and Leadership Councils, the Vice President oversees development, alumni relations and advancement and foundation services, fostering an environment of growth and opportunity.

As ISU approaches its 125th anniversary, the Vice President for University Advancement will lead the charge in orchestrating a comprehensive fundraising campaign aligned with this milestone celebration. This campaign will present a unique opportunity to collaborate with ISU leadership, alumni and the broader community to secure transformative support that will enhance ISU's ability to provide exceptional opportunities for our students.

The next Vice President for University Advancement will work closely with President Robert W. Wagner, PhD, who has been serving as president since January 2024. President Wagner is a leader who deeply values relationships and partnerships, with a strong commitment to external relations. He understands the critical importance of philanthropic support in advancing ISU's mission and creating remarkable experiences for our students. With President Wagner's commitment to fostering connections and his enthusiastic support, this role, along with planning and executing the campaign along with vitalizing ISU's alumni promises to be both challenging and immensely rewarding, and offers the chance to make a substantial impact on the future of ISU.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership: Provide visionary leadership for all fundraising and advancement programs, aligning efforts with ISU's strategic goals and mission.
  • Campaign Development: Spearhead the planning and execution of a comprehensive fundraising campaign, energizing staff, volunteers and supporters to elevate ISU's impact.
  • Donor Engagement: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with donors, engaging major gift prospects to secure significant gift commitments and stewarding ongoing relationships.
  • Presidential Support: Actively support the President in donor engagement efforts, manage interactions with major prospects, and provide thorough research and strategic development to advance ISU priorities.
  • External Representation: Act as a visible and passionate ambassador for ISU, representing the university at events and engagements with corporate and foundation executives, alumni and community leaders.
  • Collaboration: work with deans, departments, students and other constituencies to coordinate advancement activities and foster a culture of philanthropy.
  • Serve as the Executive Vice President of the ISU Foundation board in representing the interest, vision, and mission of Idaho State University while supporting Foundation goals and objectives.
  • Proposal Development: Oversee the creation and presentation of proposals, and ensure timely and effective stewardship and reporting.
  • Alumni Relations: Partner with ISU Alumni Association leadership and the Alumni Director to devise and execute strategic plans to enhance alumni engagement and build a worldwide network of advocates.
  • Team Development: Inspire and lead the advancement team by fostering a collaborative environment and prioritizing professional growth and opportunity.
  • Financial Management: Direct the drafting and management of the division's annual budget, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and objectives.
  • Additional Duties: Undertake special projects and other responsibilities as assigned by the President.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of 10 years of advancement experience with a strong background in higher education.
  • Leadership: Proven track record of leading and motivating teams to achieve exceptional outcomes.
  • Team Building: Demonstrated ability to build, inspire and develop a high-performing team, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Collaboration: Ability to contribute to the University's leadership team and advance ISU's mission and strategic plan.
  • Commitment to Engagement: Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with a various population of students, faculty, staff, alumni and donors.
  • Fundraising Expertise: Deep knowledge and significant experience of fundraising technology and effective prospect management, including developing and implementing comprehensive campaigns.
  • Integrity and Judgement: Unquestioned integrity, strategic judgment and a high degree of initiative and creativity.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Outstanding communication skills and the ability to inspire.
  • Resilience: Ability to manage multiple tasks and a wide range of demanding responsibilities.
  • Passion for Public Higher Education: A strong understanding of, and commitment to, the values of public higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree
  • Prior experience at a public higher education institution
  • Demonstrated success in the execution of an institutional comprehensive campaign
